LCCT Club Day Blog.

I have recently taken the plunge and decided to join the LCCT Club and have myself a Club Car. After racing short circuit oval in the UK many years ago in Bangers, GT Rods, and Grass track. The track I raced at was Boston in Lincolnshire under the Trackstar banner and unfortunately the town expanded to the outskirts of town and the track had to go, now a hardware store stands there.

So I got a Peugeot 405 Mi16 a 1900cc FWD sports sedan, they kick out a good 160bhp and masses of torque, I mentioned this to a then customer who I had moved his club car a few times to and from the garage for modifications etc and he said you should come along for a track day, so we hired the track which is Symmons Plains 30k south of Launceston Tasmania.

Symmons is a Fast and tight track, Hard on tyres and brakes.

The car was a 1989 405 which had a few tree limbs fallen onto the roof, had some dents with no structural damage so I used this car, for the day I fitted a 1 3/4 straight through exhaust pipe with a end can and added a air pod to the inlet removing the restricted factory air box.

Now Dead Mi16 will be good for parts, also will get the engine rebuilt to a higher spec.

So off we went to collect Gregs Holden Commodore VH fitted with a Nissan RB20 Turbo motor. Nice.

We did some a few laps to become familiar with the cars and I was loving it, was happy first time out doing 1.24, Getting more used to the car and pushing a little harded I managed a 1.17, remembering this was a standard road car with 260ks on the clock, getting more into it I pushed hard into the hairpin after overtaking a fellow racer, on brakes and swinging hard left, pulling out of the hairpin I lost some power and tap tap tap, Bloody oil surged so spun a big end bearing, doh!

So next day I removed the sump to see the damage, yes one had spun and upon closer inspection by the lads at Clarke Racing the crank had been bent! Shit possibly 9 laps and killed it. I did some reading up on these type of motors and it is a common problem especially as the Mi16's here in Aus have a aircon compressor mount cast into the alloy sump so no sump baffles were fitted.

I have since located another car, a white Peugeot Mi16 with a excellent body and motor, so I have on order a baffled sump from Peter Taylor Engineering in Sydney along with a Windage Tray (stops oil frothing) and a larger chain and sprocket for the oil pump, I will also be adding a oil cooler and a few large oil filter remotes to hold as much oil as possible.

The New Mi16, Soon to be race ready!

The White Mi16 has Koni Shocks and enkie coils springs fitted, a bonus and a big saving.
Also has a B4 Gearbox which suits Symmons. Build Diary will be added as and when i get parts etc, so keep looking back!
